Synthetic and nonmedical prescription drugs
Synthetic drugs and nonmedical prescription drugs are quickly becoming the poison of choice in the U.S. (See OH&S article). Consider the following stats:
– In 2011, AAPCC received 5,853 calls related to bath salts compared to 303 in 2010 – a 1900% increase.
– In 2011, AAPCC received 6,348 calls related to synthetic marijuana compared to 2,915 in 2010 – a 220% increase.
– Of all overdose deaths in 2008, 20,044 (55%) involved prescription drugs.
